FTM Philanthropy — Mission & Program Pillars
Why We're Here

Our Music Philanthropy Mission

At Free The Music Ministry, we believe music is a universal language capable of healing, empowering, and transforming lives. Our philanthropy program bridges gaps in access to music education, instruments, and mentorship for those in need — fostering creativity, confidence, and community.

Our music philanthropy work stands alongside organizations we deeply respect — such as the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, Sing for Hope, and the National Endowment for the Arts — each working to make music accessible to communities who need it most.

Our First Musician!

More About Durrel

Durrel Nyazika, born in December 1990, is a musician and composer from Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. He is the creator of a sound he calls Black Harmonies Music — a style rooted in ancestral tradition and expressed through contemporary musical forms.

At the heart of Durrel's music is the mbira, also known as the thumb piano — a sacred instrument of the Shona people. Traditionally, the mbira is used in spiritual ceremonies called Bira, where music serves as a bridge between the living and the ancestral realm.

Durrel was taught to play the mbira by an elder mbira master, and through this lineage-based transmission, he began composing his own original music. Over time, he developed a unique fusion style, blending the mbira with modern instruments such as guitar, keyboards, drums, and saxophone, while maintaining the spiritual integrity of the tradition.

As a contemporary Zimbabwean artist, Durrel is deeply committed to preserving and evolving authentic Zimbabwean music. In a landscape where many artists imitate external influences, he believes in carrying forward the original sound, spirit, and cultural identity of his homeland — honoring the past while creating something new for the future.

Durrel's Achievements

Since joining the program, Durrel has successfully created a foundation in his musical career. Here are some of his achievements:
