Inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 8. Calms nerves and drops the breath into the belly before you sing.
Hissing Sustained S
Long steady "ssss" to teach even airflow and appoggio (low-breath support).
Rib Expansion + Hold
Inhale fully into the ribs, hold with relaxed throat, exhale on a whispered "ha."
Long Tone on Ah
Sustain one pitch on "ah" for as long as you can without strain. Builds stamina and steady tone.
Farinelli Breath Ladder
Climbing breath counts: 4-4-4, then 5-5-5, up to 9-9-9. The classical bel canto capacity builder.
Lip Trill 5-Tone Scale
Classic do-re-mi-fa-sol-fa-mi-re-do on a lip trill. The safest, most register-balancing warm-up in existence.
Hum (Mmm) 5-Tone
Gentle hum on do-re-mi-fa-sol-fa-mi-re-do. Builds forward resonance and warms the folds.
Ng Siren
Slide up and down through your full range on the "ng" sound (end of "sing"). Bridges chest to head effortlessly.
Straw Phonation Glide
Ingo Titze's signature exercise — sing through a narrow straw, slide low to high. Balances air pressure and reduces vocal load.
Tongue Trill 5-Tone
Rolled-R (tongue trill) on a 5-tone scale. If you cannot roll an R, skip this — use the lip trill instead.
5-Tone Scale on Ah
Open "ah" on do-re-mi-fa-sol-fa-mi-re-do. Teaches even tone across a small span.
Octave Arpeggio (1-3-5-8-5-3-1)
Major triad up and back: root, 3rd, 5th, octave, 5th, 3rd, root. The fastest way to find your mix voice.
1.5-Octave Run (Ken Tamplin)
Ken Tamplin's signature — a full octave-and-a-half scale on "lah." Pulls chest voice up through the passaggio.
Chromatic 5-Note Run
Half-step (chromatic) 5-note pattern on "ee." Sharpens pitch accuracy on tight intervals.
Gospel Melisma Run
A flowing gospel-style melodic run. Teaches agility and the ornamental shape of soul melismas.
Fast Descending Scale
Quick scalar descent from the octave to the root. Trains speed and lets the voice relax on the way down.
Vowel Modification Ladder (ee-eh-ah-oh-oo)
Sustain one pitch and morph through the five pure vowels. Teaches tongue independence from jaw.
Messa di Voce (Crescendo-Decrescendo)
Bel canto classic — start quiet, swell to full volume, return to quiet, all on one breath and one pitch.
Chest-to-Head Bridging Octave
Jump up an octave, come back. The goal is to bridge registers without a "flip."
Twang "Nyah" Siren
Bright, twangy "nyah" siren — engages the AES (aryepiglottic) for penetrating tone that survives a band.
Dynamics Arpeggio
Octave arpeggio sung quiet on the way up, loud on the way down. Decouples pitch from volume.
Bratty "Nay" Octave Arpeggio
Brett Manning's signature — a deliberately bratty, whiny "nay" on an octave arpeggio. Builds cord closure for mix voice.
"Goog" 5-Tone Scale
Brett Manning staple — "goog" (rhymes with "book") on a 5-tone scale. The G-consonant kicks the larynx into neutral, the oo-vowel pulls head voice.
"Mum" 5-Tone for Resonance
Short "mum" syllables on a 5-tone scale. The M brings the sound forward into the mask.
Pulled-Chest 1.5 Octave
Ken Tamplin's method — pull chest voice up 1.5 octaves on a bright "lah." Builds a powerful, connected mix.
Witchy "Wee" Octave
Witchy, cackling "wee" on an octave arpeggio — cord compression for rock-and-roll mix belts.
Passaggio Siren on "Ee"
Smooth "ee" siren specifically through your passaggio (register-break zone). Teaches the voice not to flip.
"Gug" Octave Repeats
Octave jumps on "gug" (rhymes with "hug") — the G kicks the cords together, builds the feeling of the flip on command.
Staccato "Hey!" Arpeggio
Short, punchy "hey!" on an octave arpeggio. The hard H and clean release build cord closure without strain.
Cord-Closure "Ee" Octaves
Bright "ee" jumping the octave three times per rep. The narrow vowel forces concentrated cord approximation.
Belt Sustain on "Eh"
Held high note on an open "eh" vowel. Builds stamina and supported power in the belt register.
Head Voice Ng Sustain
Sustained "ng" toward the top of your range. Builds upper register stamina without the strain of open-vowel belts.
Descending Cord Strengthener
Descending scale on a closed "uh" vowel. The downward motion with a concentrated vowel builds cord closure from the top down.
Clean Onset 5-Tone
5-tone scale with a clean, precise onset on every note. Trains cord approximation and attack accuracy.
